About State Pay Calculator
Figuring out your real take-home pay should not require a math degree. State Pay Calculator gives you a clear, instant answer for any state in the country. No sign-up. No paywall. No guesswork.
This tool covers all 50 US states and is updated every year when the IRS and state revenue agencies release new tax rates.
What This Calculator Does
State Pay Calculator estimates your net pay after taxes and deductions. You enter your salary or hourly wage, your pay frequency, and your filing status. The calculator applies current federal and state tax rules and returns a detailed breakdown in seconds.
Here is what the calculator accounts for:
Federal income tax applies the 2026 progressive brackets, ranging from 10% on the first $11,925 of taxable income to 37% on income above $626,350. The standard deduction for 2026 is $15,000 for single filers and $30,000 for married filing jointly.
State income tax is applied using the correct rules for whichever state you select. Nine states have no state income tax at all. The rest use either flat rates or progressive brackets. The calculator uses the correct method for each state.
FICA taxes include Social Security at 6.2% on wages up to $176,100 and Medicare at 1.45% on all wages. Workers earning above $200,000 single or $250,000 married filing jointly also pay the 0.9% additional Medicare surtax.
Pre-tax deductions including 401(k) contributions, health insurance premiums, and HSA contributions are supported in the advanced options. These deductions reduce your taxable income before the calculator applies tax rates.
How We Keep the Numbers Accurate
Tax rates change every year. We update State Pay Calculator when the IRS and state departments of revenue publish new withholding tables, standard deduction amounts, and FICA wage bases.
Our data sources include IRS Publication 15-T for federal withholding tables, official state revenue department publications for each of the 50 states, and IRS Rev. Proc. announcements for FICA and standard deduction adjustments.
We review every state annually. When a state changes its rates mid-year, we update within 30 days of the effective date.
All calculations run in your browser. No data you enter is sent to our servers. Your salary, filing status, and deduction amounts stay on your device.
Who Uses This Tool
State Pay Calculator is built for anyone who wants to understand what they actually take home.
Workers starting a new job use it to understand what their offer letter really means after taxes. Someone offered $75,000 per year in California takes home a very different amount than the same worker in Texas. This tool makes that comparison instant.
People considering a move use it to compare take-home pay across states before relocating.
Workers who just got a raise use it to see exactly how much more they will actually see in each paycheck after taxes.
People planning their W-4 withholding use it to model different scenarios before submitting their form to HR.
Anyone who wants to understand why their paycheck is lower than their salary uses it to see the exact breakdown by tax type.
The Tools on This Site
State Pay Calculator is more than the main paycheck tool. The site includes three additional calculators that work alongside the primary tool.
The W-4 Calculator helps you estimate the right withholding settings before you fill out your Form W-4. Getting this right means fewer surprises at tax time.
The Bonus Calculator estimates your take-home pay on a bonus check using both the flat supplemental rate method and the aggregate method. Bonuses are taxed differently than regular wages, and this tool shows you exactly how.
The 401(k) Calculator shows how your retirement contributions affect your paycheck. Increasing your 401(k) contribution reduces your taxable income, so the real cost to your take-home pay is less than the contribution amount.
All four tools are free. All four run in your browser with no account required.
A Note on Accuracy
State Pay Calculator produces estimates. The results reflect a standard payroll scenario for your filing status and income level.
Your actual paycheck may differ based on employer-specific deductions, local city or county taxes not included here, mid-year wage changes, supplemental income, or W-4 settings your employer has on file for you.
The tool is designed for planning and comparison. For exact payroll calculations, speak with your HR department or a tax professional.
